....More than just a big race...
Sometimes, thinking about Indianapolis conjures up images of sleek race cars burning around a 2.5-mile oval race track in the month of May. We won't deny that the Indianapolis 500 is a big part of our city's heritage (and a great time, too), but there's so much more to this big down-to-earth city. Indianapolis has all the benefits of living in a big city, without all the hassles. Traffic, noise, and pollution are not problems, so you're free to relax and enjoy some of the finer points of life. In fact, Indianapolis is the 12th-largest city, but it ranks 44th in traffic problems among the nations largest cities. Indianapolis has also the lowest crime rate of any of the nations largest cities.
Downtown Indianapolis hosts a score of museums, events, shopping centers, and other attractions that simply can't be seen all in one day. Recently-opened Circle Centre Mall is the most popular mall in the state, drawing visitors from near and far. The malls concourses and shops wind above the streets of Indianapolis, housing popular retailers like Nordstrom's. Nearby Union Station gives you unique shopping and dining experiences in the setting of a historic train station. Countless other restaurants and shops can be found around the center of downtown.
If the hustle of city life is not your style, Indianapolis has plenty of outlying suburbs and other residential areas that are safe, beautiful, and convenience (even from the farthest suburbs, commutes in the morning to and from downtown are no more than 30 minutes). Geist and Morse Reservoirs are havens for anyone who enjoys boating, waterskiing, or fishing. Eagle Creek Park, located on the west side of Indianapolis, provides a year-round destination for enjoying a long walk through the forest, a picnic in a secluded field, or a visit to the Nature Center to learn about the Parks more permanent residents. Not only are all these activities family-friendly, but Indianapolis and its surrounding areas boast some very fine schools.
Theatre, sports, art, shopping, eating, and character--Indianapolis has all of these! Living in a big city can be a hassle, unless that big city is Indianapolis. We've assembled some links so you can get a better glimpse of some more things the Crossroads of America has to offer.
